May is Asian Heritage Month
December 2001, the Senate of Canada unanimously recognized May as Asian Heritage Month based on a Bill introduced by the Honourable Vivienne Poy. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to designate May as Asian Heritage Month.
Asian Heritage Month acknowledges the long and rich history of Asian Canadians and their contributions that have strengthen Canada culturally, socially, politically and economically in innumerable ways. It also provides an opportunity for all Canadians across the country to reflect on and celebrate the contributions of Canadians of Asian heritage to the growth and prosperity of Canada. We also acknowledge that in spite of the many accomplishments and successes, there have been a rise in racism and xenophobia toward Asians around the world. Asian Canadians, too, have been stigmatized, shamed and, “othered”. As we celebrate Asian Heritage Month, we also acknowledge that the overt racism that the early arrivals encountered are still present.
On behalf of the Victoria Chinatown Museum Society (VCMS), we invite you to join us to celebrate Asian Heritage Month in our second annual event, Awakening Chinatown 2023 on May 28, 2023 in Victoria’s historic Chinatown. This is an opportunity to spotlight Asian voices and talents. This vibrant event is for all communities to learn, experience and engage in a variety of activities, to see traditional and contemporary performances, walk with the Lions parade, get your fortune told, learn Chinese calligraphy, enjoy some delicious food and explore something new.
