BC’s Lieutenant Governor Becomes Honourary Patron of the New Victoria Chinatown Museum

The Board of Directors of the Victoria Chinatown Museum Society (VCMS) is proud to announce the temporary exhibit in Fan Tan Alley will now be a permanent museum and re-named the Victoria Chinatown Museum. VCMS will take over operations from the Chinese Canadian Museum Society on October 1, 2024.

At a fundraising dinner in Chinatown for the VCMS, her Honour, the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, Janet Austin, OBC, announced that she will become an Honourary Patron of the Victoria Chinatown Museum Society. “I want to thank you for bringing to life history and culture of the Chinese Canadians through the stories of people, of families, of businesses and community organizations that have contributed so much for our prosperity and to the dynamism and vibrancy of culture in British Columbia and indeed this community,” her Honour said.

“We are thrilled to have her Honour become our Honourary Patron,” said Grace Wong Sneddon, Chair of the Victoria Chinatown Museum Society. “Through the Victoria Chinatown Museum, we will continue to share their stories and artifacts as a living museum in the distinctive Fan Tan Alley space in Victoria Chinatown. We believe that learning together helps to build stronger and more inclusive communities.”

The Victoria Chinatown Museum Society was registered in 2020 and received charitable status in 2023. Victoria is the home of Canada’s oldest Chinatown. Victoria Chinatown Museum Society looks forward to sharing Chinese Canadian stories with British Columbians and visitors from around the world.
